Galaxy's Edge Lightsaber Experiences: Savi's Workshop vs. Other Options
Introduction
Galaxy's Edge at Hollywood Studios offers several ways to bring a lightsaber home. The flagship experience is Savi's Workshop, a reservation-required, guided build ceremony that draws on Star Wars lore and gives each guest a custom hilt and kyber crystal. But it is not the only option, and understanding all the paths, including reservation-free retail and walk-in timing for Savi's, helps you plan a better trip. This guide maps out what is available, how the booking process works for Savi's, and how to catch a cancellation if you missed your window.

The Three Lightsaber Paths in Galaxy's Edge
Path 1: Savi's Workshop (Handbuilt Lightsabers). The premium experience. Guests choose a theme, select hilt components from a curated set, pick a kyber crystal, and assemble the saber under the guidance of a Gatherer. The session runs approximately 20 minutes. One reservation covers one lightsaber builder. Additional guests may observe. The end product is a full-size illuminated lightsaber with a custom hilt and blade.
Path 2: Legacy Lightsabers. Disney sells pre-assembled lightsabers modeled after specific characters from the films and series. These are available at the Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities shop inside Galaxy's Edge without any reservation. If your guest wants a specific character hilt, rather than a custom build, this is often the faster path.
Path 3: Vendor and Droid depot accessories. Various handheld weapons, accessories, and components are sold throughout Galaxy's Edge without an experience requirement. These are lower cost entry points and do not require advance planning.
If the custom, guided build ceremony is the goal, Savi's Workshop is the only option. The other paths do not replicate that experience.
Step 1: Book Savi's at Your 60-Day Window
Savi's Workshop reservations open on Disney's standard 60-day advance window. Set a reminder, have your Disney account logged in and payment method ready, and book the morning your window opens.
Morning slots, particularly the first session of the day, book the fastest. If your first-choice time is unavailable, take any slot that works for your schedule and keep a watch set for the preferred time. Sessions run throughout park hours, and morning sessions are most popular because they allow the rest of the day in the park.
Step 2: Understand Walk-In Availability
Savi's Workshop does accommodate walk-ins when capacity allows, similar to how Droid Depot handles overflow. In practice:
- Slower weekdays during off-peak weeks, same-day walk-ins are possible, often with a wait of 15 to 45 minutes.
- Busy weekends and school vacation weeks, walk-in capacity fills by mid-morning. Guests who arrive expecting to walk in after lunch are often turned away.
- The walk-in counter at Savi's is separate from the reservation check-in area. Look for the Cast Member near the entrance.
If you are willing to flex on timing and arriving at rope drop is feasible, walk-in access is a legitimate strategy. Otherwise, treat a reservation as the reliable path.
Step 3: Set a Cancellation Watch If Needed
Savi's Workshop cancellations appear regularly. Guests book multiple sessions across multiple dates and then cancel what they do not need. Family size changes, itinerary shifts, and budget adjustments all free up slots.

Step 4: Prepare for the Session
Getting the most out of the Savi's Workshop experience comes down to a few practical things:
Go in with a theme in mind. The four themes, Peace and Justice, Power and Control, Elemental Nature, and Protection and Defense, each correspond to different hilt parts and aesthetic. Reading about them before you arrive means less hesitation during the session and more time actually building.
Account for time. The session itself is about 20 minutes, but check-in happens before that and the build has a reverent, ceremonial pace. Block out 45 minutes total.
Only one builder per reservation. Additional guests may watch, but only the reservation holder builds a saber. If multiple people in your party want to build, book separate reservations.
Blades are sold separately. The base experience includes the hilt. A full-length lit blade is an add-on. Factor this into your budget.
