Wild Africa Trek Booking Guide: How to Book Disney's Animal Kingdom Safari VIP Experience

Wild Africa Trek is a three-hour guided safari experience at Disney's Animal Kingdom, offered in small groups with expert naturalist guides. It takes guests into areas of the park that are not accessible on the standard Kilimanjaro Safaris ride, including rope bridges suspended above the hippo and crocodile viewing areas, a private open-air savanna platform overlooking the larger animal habitat, and a catered bush-style meal with that same savanna view. Group sizes are small enough that slots disappear fast, often within hours of the 60-day window opening. This guide covers what the trek involves, how to approach the 60-day booking window, and how to catch a slot when the window has closed.

What Wild Africa Trek Involves

Wild Africa Trek runs in small groups, typically limited to a handful of participants per departure. The experience lasts approximately three hours and is conducted by expert guides who provide context on the animals and the care systems Disney maintains for its wildlife.

The route typically includes:

The rope bridges. Guests cross rope bridges over the hippo and crocodile habitats, secured with harnesses and safety equipment. From the bridges, hippos and Nile crocodiles are visible below at close range. This is the most adrenaline-forward portion of the experience and the part most distinctly unlike what you can see on the standard safari.

The private savanna platform. After the bridge sections, the group moves to an elevated open-air platform overlooking the larger savanna, where the full breadth of the animal habitat is visible. Giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and other species move through the habitat below. The platform is for the trek group only; Kilimanjaro Safaris vehicles pass separately in the distance.

The bush meal. At the savanna platform, guides serve a catered bush-style meal. The food reflects African-inspired flavors, and the setting is the open savanna with animal views. It is the only meal experience at Walt Disney World where wildlife is the backdrop. Dietary accommodations can typically be arranged in advance.

Who Wild Africa Trek Is For

Wild Africa Trek is a premium add-on that appeals to a specific guest. It is not for families with very young children: the physical requirements (rope bridges, harnesses, extended walking on uneven terrain) set a practical lower bound. The experience is best suited for:

  • Adults and older children who are comfortable with heights and extended outdoor walking
  • Guests for whom wildlife and conservation are a genuine interest, not just a backdrop
  • Repeat Disney visitors who have done most of the standard park experiences and want something distinctly different
  • DVC members and Annual Passholders who spend extended time at the resort and want a premium experience that rewards that investment
  • Milestone and anniversary experiences where the goal is something memorable and non-standard

How the 60-Day Booking Window Works

Enchanting Extras and special experiences open on the same 60-day advance booking window as Disney dining, at 6:00 AM Eastern, 60 days before your check-in date. On-site resort guests can book their full stay window on that morning. Off-site guests book 60 days before each individual date.

Wild Africa Trek runs in very small groups, which means the total number of available slots per day is limited. This makes it one of the fastest-selling Enchanting Extras. Popular morning departure times on peak Animal Kingdom days can sell out quickly after 6:00 AM.

Steps for your 60-day booking morning:

  1. Log into My Disney Experience before 6:00 AM Eastern with payment method saved.
  2. Know your preferred date and your first and second choice departure times. Trek departures run at specific times during the day; morning departures are typically the most in demand because of cooler temperatures and more active wildlife.
  3. At 6:00 AM, navigate to Wild Africa Trek under Enchanting Extras or Experiences in My Disney Experience.
  4. Select your date, the number of participants, and your preferred departure time.
  5. Complete the booking immediately.
  6. If your preferred time is unavailable, check other departure times before checking other dates. An afternoon trek may still be available when morning slots are gone.

What to Wear and Bring

Wild Africa Trek guides typically provide specific packing guidance before the experience. General preparation:

  • Wear clothing you can move in. The trek involves uneven terrain and rope bridges.
  • Closed-toe shoes are required. Sandals are not appropriate.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent are relevant for the outdoor savanna section.
  • Cameras and phones can be brought. Some areas may have restrictions. Guides typically provide guidance on this.
  • All participants wear a safety harness for the bridge sections. The guides fit and check harnesses before the experience begins.

Verify current requirements at disneyworld.disney.go.com before your trek date.

Catching a Wild Africa Trek Cancellation

Wild Africa Trek cancellations are rarer than dining cancellations because the small group size means fewer absolute slots exist and guests who book this far in advance are often committed travelers who do not cancel casually. However, cancellations do happen, particularly in the week before the experience when travel plans finalize.

Because the group sizes are small, a single released slot on a popular date can be the difference between having the experience or not. That slot may be claimed in under two minutes by another family watching for it.

SpotSitter checks for available slots every minute on paid plans. When a slot opens, your phone gets an alert in about 90 seconds. You open My Disney Experience and book with your own credentials. We do not store your Disney credentials. Ever.

See SpotSitter pricing for plan details.

What to Do When a Slot Opens

When SpotSitter sends an alert for Wild Africa Trek, act immediately. The small group size means very few slots exist per day, and any released slot is visible to everyone watching. Have My Disney Experience ready on your phone before the watch goes live.

When the notification arrives, navigate to the Wild Africa Trek booking, confirm participants and the departure time, and complete the experience reservation.
